What Skip Tracing Actually Is
A skip trace is the work of finding someone whose current whereabouts are unknown — the term comes from a debtor who has "skipped" town. In a legal matter it is almost always the step that has to happen before anything else can: you cannot serve a defendant, enforce a judgment, or subpoena a witness until you know where they actually are.
It is not one lookup. It is cross-referencing address history, credit header records, utility and telecom data, property and vehicle records, court filings, and the people connected to the subject, then reasoning about which address is genuinely current rather than simply most recent in one dataset. A person who moved four times in three years leaves a messy trail, and reading that trail correctly is the actual skill.

The defendant moved
Your process server came back "no such person at this address." The address on the contract or the complaint is stale, and you need the current one before the clock runs out.

Some people know papers are coming and make themselves hard to find. A trace can surface a workplace, a second residence, or a relative's address where they actually spend time.
Enforcing a judgment
A judgment is only worth what you can collect. Locating a debtor, their employer, or their assets is the first step toward a levy, garnishment, or debtor examination.

What Helps Us Find Them Faster
A name is enough to start. These make the difference.
A date of birth, or even an approximate age
This is the single most useful thing after the name. There may be two hundred people named Michael Rodriguez in Los Angeles County; there are far fewer born in a particular year. Without an age, common names produce a long list nobody can act on.
Any address — even an old one
People often assume a former address is useless because the person left. The opposite is true: an old address anchors the search to a specific identity and lets us follow the trail forward. Even just the city helps.
Old phone numbers and email addresses
A disconnected number still ties records together. Phone numbers follow people across moves more reliably than addresses do, and a number from three years ago frequently leads to a current one.
Aliases, maiden names, and spellings
Marriage, divorce, anglicized spellings, and nicknames all fragment a person's record trail. Telling us that Katherine also appears as Kathy, or that a maiden name exists, prevents us from chasing two halves of the same person.
Employer, vehicle, relatives, and associates
When someone is deliberately hard to find at home, the workplace often is not. Vehicles are registered. And relatives frequently share an address history that points straight to where the subject is staying.
Who Can Order a Skip Trace
TLOxp is a regulated investigative database, not a public directory. Access is governed by federal privacy law — including the Driver's Privacy Protection Act and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act — and every search requires a permissible purpose tied to a legitimate matter.
That means we can run a trace to serve process, enforce a judgment, locate a witness, identify an heir in probate, or support a related legal matter. It also means there are requests we have to decline, however sympathetic: we cannot locate someone out of personal curiosity, find an ex-partner, or trace a person for any reason unconnected to a legal proceeding.
